Location is one of the main key points in starting with a good garden.  It is important that the spot should be near enough for one to easily make frequent visits, with all the necessary tools in tow.  A healthy garden requires daily plant watering and soil cultivation, so one that is quite far from the home is not advisable.

Avoid situating the garden right beside buildings or groups of tall trees as they may block precious sunlight needed by the plants.  Starting off with just the right lot area is also the smartest move, especially for the new gardeners.  Try to enjoy the initial challenges with planting a new garden on a small scale, instead of giving up too soon just because the size is too much to handle.

A sandy loam soil is the best type for vegetable plants to grow on.  Choose one spot where the soil is visibly not pure sand, or if left without a choice, cultivate the not so good sandy soil with compost.  A good drainage is also important because plants do need watering without getting drowned.  This sometimes happens for a garden set in a predominantly clay soil.  Soil beds should be properly elevated for quick draining and easy warming during spring. This clearly illustrates how the kind of soil and its proper setting plays a major role in starting a garden.

Garden protection in the form of fences or a wire mesh is highly recommended. Green leafy vegetables are definitely tempting to herbivorous deer and rabbits.  Geese and children may also take fancy to the visually delightful garden and using a fence or a chicken wire can help keep them at a safe distance.  Vandals are also a possibility in a community garden setting.  Security is one big factor to consider in learning how to plant a garden.

There is a variety of vegetables ideal for gardening.  These include the tomatoes, sweet pepper, pole beans, radish, carrots, lettuce and mustards, among others.  Whatever one may choose, each vegetable is definitely worth the effort and the daily attention for its growth cultivation.  To ensure continuous production, it is important to grow at least two or more vegetable crops at the same time.  Watering, mulching and harvesting on a regular basis will help keep a healthy production of these vegetables.  One may start dressing the surrounding soil with a nitrate fertilizer when the plants reach 3 or 4 inches in height.   Cultivating and keeping down the weeds and grass while they are still small is advisable as they compete for nutrients intended for the vegetables.
