Garden Pots And Planters

Using the right garden pots and planters is important for your plants success.  A wrong size garden pot can inhibit your plants growth, and the type of planter you use makes a difference with your plants.

Here are examples of garden pots and planters that can be used in the garden.

Wooden Pots

Wooden pots are great for large plants, especially perennials that come back with each season.  Wooden containers look best outdoors in highly visible areas.  Although wooden containers are on the expensive side, they tend to remain durable through time.

When choosing a wooden planter make sure it’s been treated on the outside, but not on the inside.  If you get a pot that’s treated on the inside, you might end up with dangerous chemicals being leeched into the soil, damaging your plants, and potentially making you ill.

Plastic Pots

The most greatly used planter would more then likely be the plastic pot.  Plastic containers are inexpensive, this is probably why they are so popular among gardeners. Unfortunately cheaper doesn’t always mean better.

Most people think plastic plots are more durable, because of their firm appearance.  This is not entirely true, in fact when most plastic containers are left in extreme outdoor elements they tend to crack and warp. Cracked pots are of little use for anything!

Terra Cotta Clay Pots

The second most economical garden planter is the terra cotta clay planter.  Clay pots may be inexpensive, but they are fragile and don’t do so well in freezing temperatures.  If you live in a colder climate store your terra cotta pots inside for the season.

Fired Ceramic Pots

Fired ceramic pots are a pretty good choice.  They can be a bit delicate, but many of them are pretty durable.  They’re usually glazed on the outside for appearance, but are left unglazed on the inside.  This is good since the glaze can damage plants if it leeches into the soil.

Make Your Own Garden Container

You can also make your own garden pots and planters with things you find around the house.  Most cheap plastic containers can work if they’re large enough for whatever you want to grow, just make sure to cut drainage holes in the bottom of your containers.
