Rock Gardens for Landscaping

Not every landscape is perfect and having a rock garden can help in many of those areas.  You might have an area that is just too shaded and you can’t have plants because there just isn’t enough sun during the day to help them grow, or you may have an area that has become too dry because you’re either going through a drought or rain just won’t reach it.

Or, maybe you have too much rain and your land is just too soggy to support good vegetation and has now become very swampy.   Rock gardens can help in all of these problem areas and most are very low maintenance.

Good planning can help any novice to rock gardens, but sometimes a professional’s opinion can be the difference between ordinary and magnificent. If your land is too rocky, then you can just clear up some of the rock and try to arrange what is left in an aesthetically pleasing pattern.

Adding some shallow rooted plants can help break up a large, rocky area with some green.  Or, if the area is too dense with rock, then you could build a border around the area with an artificial border, such as railroad ties – or use small plants to trace around it.

A hilly area on your land will cause your soil to erode.  Placing a rock garden in a strategic area of your land will stop the erosion and while adding a good lawn decoration.  Bringing in rocks indigenous to your area will give the illusion that the garden is more natural.

An area that is just too dry or maybe has non-fertile soil is another suitable place for a rock garden, and maybe you should even consider a Japanese rock garden.  This kind of a garden uses sand and rocks to put patterns into the ground and if you have an extremely dry climate, this will look intentional despite having a bad spot in your yard.  Some people will tend to call a Japanese rock garden a “Zen garden” but the two are not the same.

Shady areas can have a rock garden with plants that thrive in the shade.  Instead of having plants that are found naturally around rock, you would take plants that do well in the shade and populate your garden with those.  It’s a great way to expand on the rock garden concept and have a more personalized decoration.

No matter what your land is like you can always benefit from a rock garden.  Do you have a lot of land?  Let’s examine mowing.  If you have some of your vast land mass broken up by rock gardens, then it would decrease the amount of mowing you have to do but at the same time would make your land more beautiful.

Breaking up your land doesn’t mean you don’t care about your land as much if you don’t tend to every corner of it, but it does mean that you are able to be more time efficient and give your attention to other parts of your land.  You could have other projects for your land such as a waterfall or other type of water feature that would go well with rocks.

Finally, do you remember pointillism from art class?  Artists would use tiny dots made with brush strokes to make large pictures, as in Un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte by Georges Seruat.  He painted with a lot of dots in that painting (and others as well), and you could do the same with a lot of stones.  Make your lawn an art gallery of rock garden paintings.

Living Christmas Tree Care for Lively Holidays

The Christmas tree has become a norm during the Christmas holidays. Most people celebrate this special day around their Christmas trees and there they perform the traditional gift-giving activity. For some, Christmas would not be complete without a tree to decorate on. But rather than a cut one, why not try a living Christmas tree? You would not only feel the presence of this holiday but you get to conserve mother Earth and help the environment. Moreover, growing, nurturing and maintaining this type of plant is not complicated at all. It is just like you are taking care of a typical houseplant. Here are some of the few tips you might need in your potted Christmas tree care.

First you must introduce your plant both to you indoor and outdoor environment. It must feel the warm sunshine outside even for a short while to begin its growth. You may expose it on your lawn and afterwards place it on the garage or the porch. Before bringing the tree indoors, check it for insects or other bugs to ensure its health. When moved indoors, place it in a large incited tub that will help stabilize the pot and maintain water in place. Use bricks or rocks to stabilize the tree in a straight and vertical pose. Place it in a cool area, away from the sunny places including the windows.

One more factor to consider in potted Christmas tree care is the water. As for the water requirements, you must always keep the roots of the plant moist. This may be enhanced by adding up mulch into the soil to preserve moisture longer. But nevertheless, pay careful attention with over watering the plant because its roots may tend to become soggy when watered too much.

Now that you have your own living Christmas tree inside your home, you may start decorating it for a festive holiday season. Gather around the tree with your family and hang pieces of ornaments, stars, angels and other Christmas decorations that will help hype up the spirit of Christmas in your home. You may also add in Christmas lights but make sure that it gives off as less heat as possible.

Now, pay attention to this: the tree should not be kept inside the house longer than ten days. Once it gets accustomed living inside the warmth of your home, it may not survive the chill of the winter outside. Therefore time placing your tree inside your home. Once it serves its purpose for your holidays, you need to take it out of the house and plant it somewhere, either your lawn or at the forest. But if you are going to plant it in your home turf, it is advised that you dig the spot where you are supposed plant it before snow accumulates thick enough that you would not be able to dig anymore. Moreover, you must not expose it to abruptly shifting temperatures. You must again gradually introduce it to the chilling wind.

So you now know the essentials in potted Christmas tree care. What are you waiting for? Plan your Christmas tree plan ahead of time and celebrate Christmas with it.

What You Need to Know Before Buying a Gas Grill

Cooking food on a gas grill sends an aroma through the entire neighborhood making everyone’s mouth water.  If you are not attending the grilling party, you start envisioning reasons to drop by.

Whether using charcoal or gas, master grillers are a proud and competitive bunch. It doesn’t matter if they’re only grilling for two; they still want the largest, meanest looking grill with big knobs and all the latest gadgets. It’s like a trophy fish or a muscle car, with the theory being the bigger the grill the better the food.

Since many master grillers are so focused on looks rather than practicality you might wonder, are they really getting the best gas grill for their money?

Listed are features you’ll want to consider before purchasing your gas grill

Grate Makeup

  • Stainless Steel Grates – Sturdier than steel covered grates and rust resistant.
  • Porcelain Coated, Cast Iron or Steel – Coated cast iron is better at searing meat and consistent grilling temperature than coated steel.  Both are easier cleanup, rust resistant as long as coating is intact.

Burners

  • Side Burner – Handy added feature for cooking non grilling dishes
  • Infrared Burner –Uses an indirect flame by heating up a ceramic tile to cook foods.  Results in higher temperatures for faster searing which locks juices in better and has an evenly distributed heat source.

Rotisserie

  • For larger size meats such as roasts that are churning in constant motion for even cooking and a unique grill roasted flavor.

Warranty

  • Most grilling burners have a warranty of 3 – 5 years
  • Warranties that cover 10+ years will come with a higher price tag

It is entirely up to you what your requirements are, but I sure hope this helps in your decision making process.  Big knobs don’t mean a succulent grilled feast.

Forcing Paperwhites In Water

18821 Forcing Paperwhites In Water

Evening Frost Paperwhites

Christmas is in the air! Cold winter air has replaced the warm sunshine. To bring back the bright and cheery sunshine inside your homes, you may do some decorating. Paperwhite Narcissus is a great Christmas plant that you can add in your interiors to make it lively, chasing away the gloomy weather. Paperwhites are one of those plants that easily bloom, without any chilling period as a requirement. It normally blooms with just adding water into it. Once it blooms, fragrance from its flowers will definitely take your breath away. Forcing paperwhite bulbs to bloom is very easy. Here are the steps that you should follow to have that dazzling lustrous flower in your home.
 Forcing Paperwhites In Water
First, you need to gather all the materials that you need— a container that has no drainage holes that is about 8-10 cm tall, can be a clay pot, glass bowl or even a tall vase; pebbles, marbles, stones or even gravel measuring 1-2 inch; the paperwhite narcissus bulbs; and of course, water. Aside from these, you can add a decorative plant ring or a circle of twines to keep your stems mighty tall.

Now for the procedure proper for forcing paperwhites to bloom, you must first prepare the container. Make sure it does not have any holes that will let the water escape. Next, spread the pebbles or any stone of choice at the bottom of the container. Fill it until about 1-2 inches. After that, fill water into the container just until below the topmost part of the pebbles. Afterwards, assemble the bulbs on top of the pebbles, letting it sit on water. This shall stimulate the growth of the bulbs. However, you must maintain this level because if the water exceeded that amount and surpassed the base of the bulb, the plant will become rancid. Moreover, the bulbs must be placed, crowding each other to gain a marvelous appearance once the flowers bloom, mimicking a bouquet arrangement. Now that your bulbs are all set, you must guard it in place. To do that, you simply add more pebbles, occupying the gaps in between.  During this phase, the plant needs no sun or light. It must be placed in a cool area and checked regularly to see if it needs more water or it has grown its roots. As soon as you see roots developing on the plant, that’s the time that it will require sun. Place it on a sunny or bright place, allowing the flowers to bloom splendidly. Once the flowers bloom, place the plant on an area that receives indirect light to make it last longer.

Now, you can start new sets of bulbs every two weeks to have a continuous flow of paperwhites in your home. This plant does not bloom again once it withered so if you want to have it all winter long, produce as many bulbs as possible and force it to bloom at intervals. Forcing paperwhites is indeed very simple and can be done by anyone. Just think about the gorgeousness of its petals in your home and you’ll surely yearn for it. It will turn the murky mood of the winter into a jovial one and Christmas will surely be merry with this flower in your home.

Growing Amaryllis Indoors for the Holidays

prod001540 lg Growing Amaryllis Indoors for the Holidays

"Amaryllis, Charisma 1 Bulb, potted

Winter has arrived and snow is covering the lawns. For the gardeners who would not last a day without seeing the luscious green of the leaves or the glorious blossom of flowers, winter is nothing but a torture. That is why they bring around a bulb to bloom. Amaryllis is one of the most favorite plants to grow during the winter season. Growing amaryllis indoors is simple and trouble-free because it does not require complicated processes to make it bloom.
Growing Amaryllis Indoors for the Holidays Moreover, it comes in very striking colors that will certainly add color and brilliance to your home. Gardeners will definitely rejoice once its flowers blooms. The trumpet shaped flower comes in different colors, primarily red, pink or yellow. It may even be a combination of these colors. Growing amaryllis indoors is something that people get accustomed to during the long, cold winter. Some even use this as a holiday present or simply as a holiday display. This article shall help you learn steps to grow your amaryllis indoors for the long winter season.

So first begin with assembling of all the needed materials. That would be an amaryllis bulb; a pot that is heavy enough to carry a long stem, big enough to fit in the bulb and must have drainage for excess water; a bamboo stalk; and lastly, water and soil. The bulb may be bought earlier the year even before the first drop of snow arrives. Always think of it as the heart of the plant, therefore extra care should be expected from you. Now that you have all of the needed materials, you may begin enjoying growing amaryllis indoors.

The process to be discussed is very basic and therefore can be done by anyone. Just like a gardener will normally do with sowing a plant, you must partly fill the pot with soil and place the bulb into it in such a manner that its upper third would be exposed outside the pot. Afterwards, secure it with adding more soil into the spaces. Remember that only one bulb should be planted in a single pot. The pot should not be too big or too small because it should give the bulb a crowded feeling. Bear in mind that this plant tends to grow tall and heavy therefore you must keep it from falling or from breaking by setting a bamboo stalk alongside the bulb.

Now that you have your plant, you must begin the nurturing process. What do you need in this phase? Of course you will need water, fertilizer and sunlight— the common things that a plant typically needs. Watering the plants is a necessity for almost all the plants, as well as for the amaryllis plants. Sunlight is another thing but for this plant, you must place it in a bright area that receives indirect sunlight. The soil should be kept moist but not wet. After this, you should expect to see a growing stalk and eventually the flower itself in a few weeks time. In this stage, you must turn the pot periodically to equalize the exposure it gets from the sunlight or other source of light. The fertilizer, on the other hand shall help your plant store needed amount for next year’s blooming season. Unlike some of the Christmas plants, Amaryllis re-blooms after a year. All you have to do is to let its flowers fade into yellow before cutting them. This will assure you several years of service from the exact same bulb.

Organic gardening in hydroponics – Ideal growing medium mixture for organic hydroponics gardening

Gardeners experience proves that the mixture of vermiculite, perlite, and organic potting soil (loose 100% organic soil mixture is also suitable) in equal proportions is the best for the successful organic hydroponics gardening. Such mixture offers the perfect upward capillary action of water and supply of CO2 and oxygen. Organic soil in the upper medium layer provokes microbial action.

Some growers practice mixing organic nutrients (e.g. worm castings) into the upper medium part. Others just distribute them on the surface of the grow medium and then spray them with water. Another way is to mix nutrients with half a cup of water and pour onto the top of the medium. Any of these methods ensure proper nutrients entrance into the soil mixture and good absorption by the plants primary roots.

The upper layer of the medium is also called “soil alternative”, as it is the place where the nutrients are supplied to. It is treated as a standard soil container. To improve the capillary action of the water delivered by the lava rock at the bottom, it is recommended to spray the soil alternative once or twice a day with water.

Creating your organic gardening using hydroponics system pay special attention to the level of the pumped water, this must not moisten the upper part of the medium. If this happens, the nutrients, delivered to this soil part of the growing medium, will be washed out into the water reservoir, becoming unavailable for the upper part of the plants root system.

The usual watering cycle takes about half an hour to make the whole upper part of the medium wet. If this time is not enough, you may set the timer to prolong the cycles. It is also possible to spray the upper half of the growing medium with water in addition to the regular pump-triggered watering. Remember that soil-based part should never be soaked in water – being moist is enough for growing organic plants.

A lot of people would love to consider gardening caring for roses. These flowers are among the most beautiful in the world. The usual problem though is that growing roses may become difficult if you aren’t familiar with the right methods to handle them. Here are some basic tips to follow when caring for roses.

Preliminary Set-Up

You can’t just plant roses when and where you want to. You have to carefully prepare the environment of your rose plant. The first decision you have to make is to look for a rose plant that will actually grow in your locality. Not every rose type will survive in your area. If you want to be absolutely sure of your rose choice, you can always ask a neighbor who grows roses for the right rose type to grow. The soil bed for your roses should also be perfectly suited. Make sure the soil is clean and that there is enough extra space so the roses do not become constricted. Make sure too that your plant will get sunlight from where it is growing.

Feeding

Roses are plants that can really figuratively munch. You should therefore have a ready store of food for your roses. Not every rose expert will agree on the right way to feed roses. Some suggest giving roses small but regular meals. There are stores that sell packed rose food but always pick a brand with lots of nutrients.

Don’t get too excited though. Some roses will simply not do well if you fertilize them too much. The general rule is that new rose plants should only be minimally fertilized. Only full grown roses should be given standard cup fertilizer rations. Some fertilizers are especially formulated for weekly use. These kinds of fertilizers however are not necessary. You can always opt for rose fertilizers that need to be mixed with the soil only once or twice annually.

Watering

You can’t proceed with gardening caring for roses without water. The problem though is that you can easily give too much water which can lead to diseases. Some people though don’t give enough hydration. The general guide is that roses need one to two inches of water per week. Water should be able to penetrate the soil deeply. Soil that stays moist all day could result in sick roses.

Cutting Stems

Pruning is a basic rose grooming tip you shouldn’t neglect. You can start pruning as soon as buds make an appearance. Before you cut healthy stems, remove all the dead ones first. You should then consider diagonally cutting some chosen stems. This will allow you to shape your rose plant according to your preference.

Spraying

You may opt for an organic or non-organic spray for your rose plant. There are many products that you can buy from a plant store to use for rose spraying. This is an important step you shouldn’t miss because it is one of the ways that will help prevent diseases.

Gardening caring for roses may be a great challenge for some. The crucial point though is to just maintain a passion for roses to make them bloom.

Using Perennial Vegetables for Landscaping

Planting perennial vegetables as part of your landscape is a great idea, because it helps you make maximum use of your space.  Instead of hurting your beautiful landscape by tearing up your lawn to plant a traditional garden, you can simply work your food plants into your existing landscape.

You can use a wide variety of perennial vegetables and herbs as part of your landscape, and they can be just as beautiful as traditional landscape plants. Perennial vegetables are great, because you don’t have to replant them each year.

You plant them once, and with a small amount of ongoing maintenance, you’ll have a beautiful landscape and fresh food every year. Perennials need to be planted in good conditions right from the start.

If you plant annuals in poor soil or a bad location, you’ve only lost a single year.  But if you plant perennials improperly, you’ve wasted a plant that could have grown for many years.

First of all, be sure you plant your perennials in a good location right from the start.

Check the required growing conditions for the variety before you plant it.  Make sure you choose a spot that has the proper amount of sunlight for the plant.  Don’t forget to take into account the potential growth of any other nearby plants!  If you plant something in a sunny location, it might be shady in a year or two if surrounding plants grow larger.

Be sure to prepare your soil before planting.  It’s much easier to modify the soil before planting than it is to make corrections later.  Be sure the soil has the proper pH levels and nutrient levels, and make certain your soil will support the correct moisture level for the plants.  You’ll need to be certain to have the right balance, because different plant varieties require different types of soil.

Another thing to keep in mind is your zone.  Some perennial plants won’t be very tolerant of extreme heat or frosts, so care in this matter is essential.  The point of planting perennials is to have plants that return each year.  If they die completely in the winter, they won’t return in the spring, so be sure you get your zone correct.

There are many perennial herbs that make a great addition to an edible landscape.  Many types of mint are perennial in a lot of zones.  They have beautiful foliage, and some of them have very pretty blossoms.  Other perennial herbs that are ideal for landscaping include French tarragon, lavender, chives, Greek oregano, English Thyme, garlic chives, lemon balm, and sage.

A lot of vegetables are quite attractive, and can be very nice in landscapes.  Perennial varieties of chard, beans, and broccoli are all great for landscapes.  Asparagus, sorrel, fennel, ginger, artichokes, Jerusalem artichokes, chicory, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, rocket, and sorrel are all great choices.

You can also use other edible plants for your landscaping.  Fruit trees are an obvious choice.  Many fruit trees have absolutely stunning blooms.  Cherry trees, apple trees, and plum trees all have lovely blooms that will make a great addition to your landscape.  The fruits they bear can also add an amazing color and style to your yard.  Having bright red cherries and golden apples can really enhance a landscape.

Organic gardening in hydroponics – The root system

Plants, growing in the containers, will develop two types of the roots: the upper one, which will uptake plant nutrients from the upper part of the medium; and the lower roots, which will reach the lava rock part of the growing medium.

The upper root system is primary; it includes web-like thin roots that look similar to those that develop in the plants grown in the standard soil. They absorb multiple nutrients, thus ensuring the flourishing of a plant and its normal growth. The lower roots that are secondary will grow in the lower part of the medium (which can be lava rock, sand, gravel, perlite or pumice). These look typically to the hydroponically grown plants: long, rope-like, and stringy. These roots mainly absorb water; in addition, they receive much oxygen between watering cycles, which leads to the improved nutrients metabolism and faster growth.

These days hydroponics gardening gains more and more popularity in different parts of the world. More and more people become fascinated with this way of plants growing. Due to the constantly increasing interest in hydroponics, new methods and techniques of this gardening type appear. They are all aimed at the easing of the process of plants growing, improving the fruits, vegetables, and greens quality and taste, as well as at the making the whole process as eco-friendly as possible. Indeed, the new techniques try to solve the problem of hard-to-dispose used materials (as rockwool) and chemically-laden water and other wastes. Moreover, the primary goal of today hydroponics is to use exclusively organic materials, which offer the benefits in the crops quality and work of a gardener.

Not so long time ago gardeners were amazed by such hydroponics methods as Nutrient Film/Flow Technique, Ebb and Flow, Aeroponics, and even Semi-Organic Hydroponics. These days the leader of this gardening is Totally Organic Hydroponics, which major benefit is the possibility to grow 100% pure organic garden plants.

Organic Gardening – A Speech For Teachers

Organic gardening has increasingly become an important part of the curriculum in schools around the world. Teachers at every grade level find themselves teaching it to students, and sometimes being called on to give a speech to a group of parents. As a career educator and principal, I know the difficulty of opening up time for speech preparation, and offer this organic gardening speech for your use. Feel free to edit it to fit your needs.

Organic Gardening Speech

How selfish are you? On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, how selfish would you rate yourself? If you are the least bit selfish, you might be interested in organic gardening.

An organic gardening speech might seem more appropriate coming from a Home Economics teacher, but I am just selfish enough that I love organic gardening. I want to share that love with you and with your children.

Imagine

I want you to come with me, in imagination, to a time and place before the Industrial Revolution. The year is 1707. It is late summer. We find ourselves walking the streets of a small town. Houses are spaced well apart for privacy. Land stretches out behind each house. As we look, we notice that much of that land is taken up by gardens. Here and there, we see both adults and children actively engaged in gardening. The plants are beautiful.

You call to one of the adults and ask what they use to make the garden so lush. A broad smile breaks, and through the smile come the words, “Feed the soil, and the soil will feed the plants.”

You shake your head. Poor people. Too bad they don’t know about that miracle combination of chemicals you saw advertised on TV last week. That’s the easy way to grow spectacular plants!

Dinner

The organic gardener invites us to join them for the evening meal, and we accept. At dinner, we join in the prayer of thanks, and then watch in amazement as the children, one after another, begin eating fresh vegetables.

You yourself are not that fond of vegetables, but you politely take a small serving of each. You bite into a leaf of steamed cabbage, and your eyes open wide in amazement. It is sweet – twice as sweet as the cabbage you buy at your local market! You watch a small child fill his mouth with dark green kale, and shudder. There’s a small spoonful of the nasty vegetable on your own plate, and you pick at it, putting a single small leaf in your mouth. Amazing! It, too, is twice as sweet as any kale you ever ate. The same seems true of every vegetable on the table. You decide that if your supermarket vegetables were this good, you would eat a lot more of them.

Our imaginary trip ends at that dinner table, and we return to the present.

Organic Gardening’s Benefits

Organic gardening has many benefits. If you are completely selfish, you will want those benefits for yourself. If you are unselfish, you will want those benefits for your family. Let me give you just three of organic gardening’s benefits.

1. Taste: Organic gardening has been proven to produce tastier fruits and vegetables. A Hong Kong study measured Brix levels, the percentage of sugar in plant juices, using produce from organic gardening and from non-organic gardening. The results showed that organic gardening produced produce that was 2 to 4 times as sweet as that produced by non-organic gardening. Sweeter fruits and vegetables are tastier, and easier to eat, whether you are a young person or an adult. Organic gardening helps us eat better by providing tastier fruits and vegetables.

2. Nutrition: Organic gardening has also been found to provide nutritionally superior produce. Virginia Worthington, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, compared the composition of vegetables grown simultaneously under different farming conditions. Her work included 41 studies with 1,240 comparisons of 35 vitamins and minerals. Worthington found that organic gardening produced vegetables and fruits that were higher in most minerals and vitamins than those from non-organic gardening. Not only that, organic gardening produce was lower in potentially harmful nitrates, which result from nitrogen fertilizers. Dr. Worthington concluded that produce from organic gardening is nutritionally superior. You and your family will enjoy better health with fruits and vegetables from organic gardening. (Effect of Agricultural Methods on Nutritional Quality: A Comparison of Organic with Conventional Crops, Virginia Worthington MS, ScD, CNS, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, 1998, Alternative Therapies, Volume 4, 1998, pages 58-69)

3. Exercise: Finally, organic gardening offers you and your children regular daily exercise in the outdoors. Organic gardening helps you build muscles, especially important core muscles. Organic gardening gets you into the sunlight where you can absorb essential vitamin D. Organic gardening is a great stress management tool. Organic gardening gives you an outlet for creativity. It provides satisfaction as you see your work produce useful fruits, herbs, and vegetables.

We could talk about the aesthetic pleasures of organic gardening – how beautiful that garden might become. We could talk about how you can save money with organic gardening – growing your produce instead of purchasing.

Finally, we could talk about how important it is for our children to learn about organic gardening, to embrace it as the way to better health, and to practice it with school, home, and community gardens.

An organic gardening speech could go on for hours, but I’m going to stop here, hoping that I have whetted your appetite enough that you will seek out more information on organic gardening.

Helpful Tip for Speech-givers

A few large bowls of beautiful organic produce can be set on the platform or around the room to help visual learners picture organic gardening.
